I know a lot of us are pretty much guilty of this bad habit. Makeup brushes can be a haven for dirt, oil, bacteria and all sorts of nasty things that you could think of. Failing to sanitize and clean your bristles can obviously result to transmitting this buildup to your skin and causing horrible pimples, acne and breakouts! Especially to those of you with sensitive skin! Some severe viral infections can spread as well through sharing brushes or makeup products.
Additionally, cleaning your makeup brushes regularly will also stretch their durability and enhance their performance.
So everybody has their own way of cleaning their brushes, but here are a few tips I’ve picked up:
- Try to clean your brushes at least once a week.
- Use olive oil on a piece of tissue paper and swirl your brushes to remove some of the makeup on the brushes. This will also help condition the brushes.
- Use baking soda (to deodorize and sterilize) and baby shampoo.
- Set your brushes to dry upside down so that the liquid doesn’t soak into the base of brushes and cause the bristles to fall out.
- For on the go cleansing, specialized cleansers are available at most makeup stores. But this is not as good as shampooing your brushes which gives them a deep cleanse.
